特罗哥中尉被派往帝国边境“鞑靼人的荒漠”上的巴斯蒂亚诺城堡。满腔热情的他渴望为国效力，建立功勋；他期待歼灭敌人，但这期待已久的敌人却始终没有露面。特罗哥中尉最终与所有的前辈军官一样，耗尽了自己的意志和生命，最终换来的只是一声叹息。
这是一部描写“期待” 的卡夫卡式作品，展现了人性的扭曲与异化，巴斯蒂亚诺城堡的军人形象十分典型：惨遭横祸的士兵、葬身沙场的伯爵、在荒野自尽的上尉……所有这一切皆是荒诞的人生写照，无不折射出人生的无谓与凄凉。本片被意大利评论界认为是该国70年代最优秀的影片之一。
本版本由意大利发行的蓝光原盘压制而成，中文字幕为本人于2022年从英文翻译而来。
